Demographics

The facility was founded in 1887 as a "home for the mentally infirm".

BSDC is licensed for 449 intermediate care facility/mental retardation beds and 31 acute care facility (hospital) beds.

The average age of the individuals served is 45, with an age range from 7 to 87 years. All of the individuals residing at BSDC are voluntary admissions with natural or legal guardians.

The primary diagnosis of those served is:

Mild retardation, 9%
Moderate retardation, 7%
Severe retardation, 9%
Profound retardation, 73%
Unspecified, 2%

Four percent are school age and 95% have two or more other disabling conditions in addition to mental retardation. Other disabilities include:

43% dually diagnosed,
16% fed by gastrostomy tube;
44% non-ambulatory,
53% epilepsy,
15% cerebral palsy,
31% blind.
